In the beginning (meaning 1976), Brick dominated New Jersey High School Ice Hockey. Soon after Montclair and Livingston joined the party. Then in the 1990s, the non-Public schools dominated.

NJSIAA recognized that this dominance needed to be addressed and in 2005, the championships were divided into Public and non-Public championships. As the Public programs grew, NJSIAA divided the Public championships, first, A and B in 2008 and then A, B, and C in 2018 (school student body size the criteria, for example Public B between 1060 and 1542 students and Public A below 1060 and Public C above 1542).

The ascension of the Randolph RAMS initiated in 1999 when we had faced Brick Township in the finals, losing 5-1.  In 2002, we had tried again losing to Brick by the same score. In 2003, we had faced the other team from Brick, this time Brick Memorial, and we dominated 7-0.

The years from 1999 to 2020 saw the RAMS reach the finals 16 of the 22 years, winning 9 championships (2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2020). We lost in 1999, 2002, 2005, 2010, 2016, 2018, and 2019).

The team we’ve faced the most is Ridge, winning 1-0 in 2009, losing 4-1 last year, and our overtime win 3-2 last Monday. The good news is that all of the overtimes in 2006, 2007, and last Monday were wins to the Randolph RAMS.
