2020 Mennen Cup Final: Morristown-Beard 5-1 Randolph
Last night, Beard completed their revenge tour of their divisional rivals with a 5-1 victory over Randolph in the Mennen Cup final.

Last season:

  • Beard’s overall record was 10-13-3 with major losses to Princeton Day 2-13 and Seton Hall Prep 2-13.
  • In the Mennen Division, they suffered painful losses to Madison 7-1, Randolph 5-1, Knolls 5-1, and Chatham 5-1.
  • Their season finished with a 7-0 beating by Christian Brothers in the New Jersey Non-Public Tournament.

This season:

Beard started with more of the same, with losses to Randolph 5-3 on 12/3 and Morris Knolls 6-1 on 12/6 in their first two games.
Then something clicked, they went undefeated over the next 14 games and beat every one of their Mennen Division rivals with a combined score of 51 goals for and 12 against.

Then came Don Bosco Prep on 1/27/2020.  The 3-7 Bosco loss gave Beard that bitter taste of defeat again and they remembered it well and wanted no more of it.  They have won their next six games and in the Mennen Cup, they crushed Chatham 7-0 on Thursday and then put the hurting on the RAMS last night.

Their top line of Matthews, Humphries, and Fernandez scored 54 goals and recorded 81 assists this season and were responsible for 3 goals and 4 assists last night. Humphries was interviewed after the game:
“Everyone’s going and today we played all four lines and played well.” and Matthews added: ” Me, him (Humphries), and Cam (Fernandez) developed really good chemistry and I think it showed tonight.”

Game Stats:

  • Randolph Goals: JT Zangara (1)
  • Randolph Assists: Nick Gallo (1), Ben Yurchuk (1)
  • Randolph Saves/Shots: Gavin Einfeldt 8/13, Joey Yutsus 4/4

  • Mo-Beard Goals: Jake Ochab (1), Hollis Humphries (1), Nick Vantassell (1), Tommy Matthews (2)
  • Mo-Beard Assists: Hollis Humphries (2), Cam Fernandez (1), Nick Vantassell (1), Noah Jones (2), DJ Layden (2), Tommy Matthews (1)
  • Mo-Beard Saves/Shots: Luke McManus 33/34

And so, the memory of one of the most spectacular clean body checks by Jordan Cross in the first period and a sweet revenge goal by JT in the second period, less than a minute after the back to back Beard goals by Matthews and Humphries, the bitter taste of defeat will be remembered by the RAMS skaters going into the state tournament next week.

Losing to the team ranked 6th in New Jersey is still losing.  Not one team in the Public Group B tournament is even ranked in the top 20 by nj.com.  Oh Yeah, there is one!

Remember Ridge last year and learn from Beard.

STAY FOCUSED! GO RAMS!

P.S. Is it appropriate to wish Beard well in the state’s Non-Public?  They will be facing top 20 teams all tournament.
